Our Backstory
ACME Timber Lofts embraces New England’s rich manufacturing heritage and the extensive forest systems surrounding its urban centers. By developing a unique timber construction solution tailored for historic city centers, ACME offers a model for future development where mass timber structures and passive house design meet sustainable forestry to create synergy between dense cities, healthy forests, and a thriving, wood-based industrial economy. The result is the preservation and purposeful restoration of buildings that extend their useful lives.
For eight decades, as the ACME Furniture Building, this 4-story masonry structure at 33 Crown was home to a variety of small-scale manufacturing operations that also took advantage of the Ninth Square’s location between the New Haven Harbor and the commercial downtown core. Constructed in 1877, the building’s structure reflects the prevalent mill-style construction that dominated 19th-century New Haven.

One of the most inspiring corners of our building now soars with a 98-foot mural by Uruguayan artist DAVID DA LA MANO, honoring 19th-century Black engineer William Lanson, who expanded New Haven’s Long Wharf and helped establish its first integrated neighborhood. The mural features powerful imagery—including a soaring eagle, intertwined figures, and a solitary tree—inviting viewers to reflect on legacy, struggle, and transformation. De la Mano, known for his allegorical style, hopes the piece sparks contemplation through its layered symbolism and open-ended interpretation.
